Fairness and efficiency for allocations with participation constraints

چکیده
We propose a notion of fairness for allocation problems in which different agents may have reservation utilities, stemming from outside options, or property rights. Fairness is usually understood as the absence envy, but this can be incompatible with utilities. It possible that Alice's envy Bob's assignment cannot remedied without violating participation constraint. Instead, we seek to rule out justified defined remedy would not violate any agent's show fairness, meaning achieved together efficiency and individual rationality. introduce competitive equilibrium approach price-dependent incomes obtaining desired properties.

Efficiency and fairness of system-optimal routing with user constraints
We study the route-guidance system proposed by Jahn, Möhring, Schulz, and Stier-Moses [Operations Research 53 (2005), 600–616] from a theoretical perspective. As system-optimal guidance is known to be problematic, this approach computes a traffic pattern that minimizes the total travel time subject to user constraints. These constraints are designed to ensure that routes suggested to users are ...
متن کاملRanking with Fairness Constraints
The problem of ranking a set of items is a fundamental algorithmic task in today’s datadriven world. Ranking algorithms lie at the core of applications such as search engines, news feeds, and recommendation systems. However, recent events and studies show that bias exists in the output of such applications. This results in unfairness or decreased diversity in the presentation of the content and...
متن کاملCombining Fairness and Efficiency in Dynamic Task Allocation with Spatial and Temporal Constraints
Realistic multiagent team applications often feature distributed dynamic environments with soft deadlines that penalize late execution of tasks. This puts a premium on quickly allocating tasks to agents, but finding the optimal allocation is NP-hard due to temporal and spatial constraints that require tasks to be executed sequentially by agents. We propose a novel task allocation algorithm that...
متن کاملFinding Fair Allocations for the Coalition Problem with Constraints
Fair allocation of payoffs among cooperating players who can form various coalitions of differing utilities is the classic game theoretic “coalition problem.” Shapley’s value is perhaps the most famous fairness criterion. In this paper, a new allocation principle is proposed based on constraints. Initially constraints are defined by the coalition payoffs, in the standard way. The algorithm proc...
متن کامل(In)Efficiency in Intrahousehold Allocations *
Previous research using plot-level agricultural data from Burkina Faso found that the allocation of resources within African households was Pareto inefficient, contradicting most collective models of intrahousehold bargaining. I provide an explanation for these households' Pareto inefficient behavior and I test its robustness using an alternative dataset also collected in Burkina Faso. Househol...
